A Course in Miracles
What is it?
A Course in Miracles is a 1200-page, three volume books: The Text, The Workbook, and The Manual for Teachers. It is also a phenomenon, a work whose content and characteristics, whose history and impact on the world are so unique that there are no neat labels or categories for it. The Course was authored not by a person, but by an “inner voice” that dictated the material to a research psychologist during a remarkable, unfolding story beginning in the mid-1960’s. Its teaching, again falling outside of preexisting molds, combines the insights of contemporary psychology, with the spiritual wisdom of the East, and much of the essence of Christianity. The Course, however, is more than an abstract philosophy and includes a highly specific training program in the practical application of its principles, focusing on forgiveness in the area of relationships.
In our mundane, physical world and in a secular age that appears to have forgotten God, A Course in Miracles is seemingly itself a miracle—a breakthrough of God into the world. In its story, its teaching and its results, it speaks of another reality, on that lies beyond our everyday experience. The Course certainly has been a “miracle” in the lives of millions of people who are students of it, showing a profound ability for facilitating deep inner transformation. In fact, a whole spontaneous movement has grown up around it since its publication in 1976.
How did it come about?
A Course in Miracles began with the sudden decision of two people to join in a common goal. Their names were Helen Schucman and William Thetford, Professors of Medical Psychology in New York City. It does not matter who they were, except that the story shows that with God all things are possible. They were anything but spiritual. Their relationship with each other was difficult and often strained, and they were concerned with personal and professional acceptance and status. In general, they had considerable investment in the values of the world. Their lives where hardly in accord with anything that the Course advocates. One day William stated, “there must be a better”, way and Helen agreed with conviction and soon after A Course of Miracles became.
What is the purpose of the Course?
The purpose of A Course in Miracles is to be an agent of healing, inner healing.
This is how A course in Miracles begins. It makes a fundamental distinction between the real and the unreal, between knowledge and perception. Knowledge is truth, under one law, the of love or God. Truth is unalterable, eternal and unambiguous. It can be unrecognized, but it cannot be changed. It applies to everything that God created, and only what He created is real. It is beyond learning because it is beyond time and process. It has no opposite, no beginning and no end. It merely is.
Nothing Real Can Be Threatened
Nothing Unreal Exists
